SHIV KUMAR: Uber cab driver who turned out to be serial rapist

Shiv Kumar Yadav, the Uber cab driver, who allegedly raped a woman in Delhi, has turned out to be a habitual sexual offender.

The victim is a 27-year-old finance executive with an MNC, who had booked the taxi to go back home.

Yadav, 32, overpowered her on way, and sexually assaulted her. He allegedly threatened her of pushing a rod in her private parts, just like the infamous Nirbahaya rape case.

The accused, who has now been arrested, is known to have been involved in half-a-dozen cases of rapes and sexual assaults previously.

In fact, preliminary interrogation has revealed that in his native town in UP, he was feared by women.

He even sexually assaulted a 46-year-old woman whom he called 'chachi' (aunt). Despite a number of crimes against him, he managed to get the character certificate and was hired to work as a taxi driver.

Yadav hails from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. His father was a head master in a school in Mainpur, believes that he has a charming personality.

After police seized the car and cell phones, they found Yadav had dozens of porn clips stored in phone and contraceptives were kept in the car. He proved to be a tough nut for interrogators.

He kept lying and misleading them. But his lies were exposed. In 2011, he was arrested for a rape case in Delhi. He was sent to jail but after spending a few months in prison, he managed to come out.

Yadav was acquitted in this case. Apart from other cases of sexual assault including rape and molestation in UP, he was also booked under the Goond Act for anti-social activities. Clearly, he had a criminal record but this couldn't stop him from being hired by Uber.

In the probe, it was found that he targeted women who were looking for cabs outside malls in Gurgaon. Times of India reports that he got away every time since he knew police's operating procedure.

"After committing a crime, he would lie low for a few days and then return to trap more women. He used to wait outside malls late at night, and if a woman hired his cab, he drove to a secluded area, stopped and forced her to have sex with him", wrote the paper in its December 12 report.

Yadav, who worked for a radio cab service till 2011, when he was first accused of rape in Delhi, bought his own car in May this year. Now he has been arrested, produced in the court, and sent to judicial custody in Tihar jail. The trial has begun.
