Nirbhaya case main accused Ram Singh: Gang-raped, Tortured Girl in Bus in Delhi

In a crime that outraged India, six persons gang raped a girl who had boarded a bus along with her male friend in Delhi.

The main accused, Ram Singh, 33, and his accomplices, brutally assaulted the girl when she resisted the rape bid.

They also beat up her friend, hitting him and the girl with iron rod, for trying to save her.

All this happened, ironically, in a school bus which was used to ferry children in the day.

PROFILE OF RAM SINGH

Ram Singh, who hails from Rajasthan, and lived in Ravidas Camp in South Delhi, was living in national capital for twenty years. On the day, he was in such monstrous rage that he brutally attacked the girl repeatedly.

Ram Singh hit the girl on her face and private parts with her shoe and with iron rod. After the gang rape, the condition of the girl was so grim that her entrails had given way and she remained in hospital on life support system for days.

Overcome by lust, the criminals committed this heinous crime. Doctors said that hadn't such such beastly attack on a girl's body in their entire careers. The next day they went about their daily routine. Had it not been a strong movement in the country and media reaction, they may not have been arrested.

Millions came on streets in India. Parliament spoke in one voice. All sections of society demanded strict laws to check rape and sexual crimes. The men who ruined the life of a young medical intern from Uttarakahand, were caught.

The police took up investigation and the accused were arrested. One after the other, six culprits were caught. The men who brought shame to India, were now facing trial. Some of them seemed sorry but Ram Singh was shamelessly defiant and had no remorse.

The 23-year-old girl who hails from Dehradun (Uttarakhand) was waiting for the bus at Munirka. She was accompanied by a friend. It was not unusually late, just 9.15 pm, in Delhi, when they saw the bus with barely half-a-dozen people.

They mistook it to be a passenger bus and boarded it. Ram Singh, the driver, made lewd comments, which led to argument. Singh, his younger brother, Mukesh, fruit seller Pawan, gym instructor Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Raju, all pounced upon the physiotherapy student.

The shrieks of the girl didn't affect them. Her friend was brutally assaulted. After the gang rape, the girl and her friend were stripped and thrown out of the bus. The reason was that the culprits didn't want to leave any evidence.

The clothes that had blood and semen were later recovered. Singh, said police, confessed everything without any repentance. He had even taken the bus the next day and washed it so that the bloodstains could be removed from the body. Ram Singh's wife died four years ago.

His younger brother Mukesh is unmarried. The other accused Raju and Akshay are bus cleaners. Ram Singh had appeared in a Star TV show in which he had posed as a victim and made complaints against the owner of the bus.

In this episode, he was shown as a poor man who was taken for a ride. Retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi gave verdicts in this programme. The Delhi police claim their success in catching the culprits in record time. Within a day most of the accused were caught and in two days, all the six culprits were brought to books.

LATER UPDATE

Ram Singh died in custody. He was found hanging in the jail. It was said that he had committed suicide though there were speculations that he was killed by fellow criminals in prison.
